Sports Day 2015

On Friday 10th July we staged a very successful sports day event. The competition was as fierce and closely contested as we've ever seen. Remarkably, and for the first time, the spoils were shared by Eleanor and Barclay house:

We employed a new online scoring system this year which was managed by the BTEC Sport Students, who did a tremendous job continuously updating the system from their phones. The system allowed us to send automated tweets of event winners and allowed us to keep abreast of the current league table throughout the afternoon. Big thanks must go to the whole BTEC Sport team and in particular, Casey Herrick and Grace Rudman, who spent hours inputting data prior to the event.

For details of event winners, please see the screenshots of the records below:

This year, we introduced some new roles for staff and students. The video footage was taken by Dr Grey, Mr Parchment and Miss Goodwin. The photographs were taken by Jill Bertolone, Miss Wood (ably assisted by Holly Charles). Many thanks for your work on the day:

Finally, we had a few roving reporters charged with the responsibility to interview competitors, spectators and teachers alike. Here is Sam Best's report on Sports Day:

Down at the long jump pit, one competitor, Jada Senar, commented on how she ‘really likes sports day’.  After finishing her competition she also added how ‘long jump is really fun because I like to see how far I can get.” It is this positive competitive nature that is exactly what we need in sporting events and it is something that the school is really proud to be associated with.

In one of the girls relay races one member of Catharine House said how ‘it’s great that the school does many things so that all the forms get on better with each other’ she then commented on how it is ‘because of this connectivity that we can work better as a team and hopefully win!”
Mrs Cringle, who was judging the Boys Long Jump, mentioned how ‘some of the boys have done some really impressive jumps.’ However it must be mentioned that it is not just the winning and the ‘impressive jumps’ that make sports day but it is how it is excellent for our health and respiratory system. Even those who are not competing are reaping the benefits of having an afternoon of relaxation in order to relieve stress so that students can be fit and ready for the busy last week of school.

Sam Best, a student in year ten, said how he’s ‘enjoying doing nothing today after winning the high jump for MA yesterday.” After more discussion he said how it’s ‘better than yoga’ and how he wishes how ‘we could have a full Monday so that we can complete our coursework.’ This comes after the controversial decision to prioritise yoga over vital coursework that needs to be completed by the end of this school year.

Mr Kennedy told us how he believes this is ‘the most well organised sports day ever.’ He also believes that this year’s annual competition homes some of our ‘fastest runners ever’. It was obvious that he was really impressed with this year’s competition and we can suggest that he believes that the competition will be even better next year despite not having some of the star competitors from year 10 next year.

Mr Panesar said. “Chemical energy to Elastic energy to Kinetic Energy. I just couldn’t convert it quick enough.”  We have not decided whether this is a valid excuse or not however we would like to congratulate one of the our teacher's efforts.
